Back to School
This week’s Edit is a fresh take on the end-of-the-holidays vibe, which is certainly in the air as schools in Scotland reopen this week.
For me, summer is a lovely (but occasionally exhausting!) kind of chaos - four big kids coming and going, meals at odd hours, routines going out the window, a mountain of trainers in the hallway, the house humming and beeping with the never-ending sound of machines washing, drying, microwaving, gaming…
I find myself carving out pockets of stillness; giving the kitchen a good clean before a quiet cup of coffee, time out to arrange some flowers, enjoying the feeling of momentary stresses and strains being blown away as I hang out another load of washing.
For me, this time of year is all about ritual, intention, routine and thoughtful resets; a gentle shift from the loud brightness of summer to the softer, slower, mellow rhythm of early autumn.
Think drawers lined with crisp, scented paper, solitary moments for morning tea and planning the day, organisation lists created with headspace, lighting a candle in the afternoon, just because… and the simple pleasure of putting things back where they belong, uncluttered.
A quiet celebration of getting your home (and yourself) back in order, ready for the season ahead.
